MACARON DAY
The classic macaron is a cookie made primarily from almond flour, sugar, and egg whites. The macaron traces its history back to 16th Century Italy, but today is associated mainly with France. The modern version comes in a variety of colors and flavors, with a creamy filling
Macaron Day began in Paris in 2006, and has been a tradition in New York City since 2010. Participating bakeries in NYC contribute a portion of the day’s proceeds to City Harvest, which collects food that would otherwise go to waste from restaurants and grocers, and delivers it to soup kitchens and food banks across the city.
This is the second year of North Carolina’s own Macaron Day, which like New York’s will be Sunday, March 20th. Pastisseries in Raleigh, Durham, Asheville, and Winston Salem are participating, with a portion of their Macaron Day profits to go to Meals on Wheels.
A sweet idea! You can find a list of participating bakeries here.
