Coming back to Raleigh from a listing appointment in Wake Forest I couldn’t help but notice this crazy display right on Six Forks Rd.  It turned out to be a fascinating llittle shop called When Pigz Fly.  Their slogan is, “Where culture and creativity collide.”

All kinds of things collide, actually — like past and present. The building is a 1936 gas station, now reinvented to a glory it never knew.  Also colliding are reality and fantasy, in the shape of a surreal menangerie of metal animals.   Inside, weird and wonderful don’t collide, exactly — they sort of merge.

According to the website, www.whenpigzfly.com, the owners are a brother and sister whose purpose is to showcase local artists.  It’s a great place to Christmas shop for people who have everything because here unique is the norm.  The bead spiders on their bead spider webs are not for sale, unfortunately, but there’s plenty else to choose from.

When Pigz Fly is about a mile north of 540 on Six Forks — and worth the trip.
