One of the best aspects of being a real estate agent doesn’t really kick in until after you’ve been in the business for a good many years. Who knew? I’ve only recently — after 12 years — begun to appreciate how this career allows me to participate the American “Circle of Life” in a very personal way. It’s awesome! I smile just thinking about it.
Over these twelve years that I’ve been helping people buy and sell homes, many of my clients have been first-time buyers. Some of them were single, looking to set themselves up in a cute little house or a townhouse; others I met as newlyweds or still unmarried couples, dreaming of a modest starter home. I enjoy educating first-time buyers about the process, empowering them to make a decision, and sitting with them at their first-ever closing to share their excitement.
Then time goes by, and the first-time buyers call me up and say, “Guess what? This house has been great, but it’s time to move on.” For the singles, the precipitating event is usually the addition of a Significant Other to their lives. For the couples, I hear from them when the first child turns five or a second child is born, whichever comes first. These are happy reasons to move! The Circle of Life is visibly in motion, working just like it’s supposed to work. It’s all good!
Along the way, I’ve become something of an expert on the timing and execution of a successful sell-buy, which can be tricky. I’ll write about that next.
